Compostable vs Biodegradable: What's the Real Difference & Why It Matters for Tableware

Every eco plate claims to be biodegradable or compostable. But these are not the same thing. Here is what each term actually means for your tableware choice.

Walk into any eco-products market and you will see labels everywhere: biodegradable, compostable, eco-friendly, green, natural. These terms get used interchangeably by manufacturers and sellers, but they mean different things. If you are a buyer for a hotel, caterer, or restaurant, understanding the difference between compostable and biodegradable helps you make an informed choice and avoid greenwashing.

What does biodegradable actually mean?

Biodegradable means a material will eventually break down through natural biological processes (bacteria, fungi, etc.). The catch is that there is no time limit. A plastic bag is technically biodegradable because it will break down, but it takes 300 to 500 years. Even thermocoal is biodegradable on a geological timescale. The word alone tells you nothing about how quickly or safely a product decomposes.

What does compostable mean?

Compostable means a material breaks down into nutrient-rich humus within a defined, short timeframe (typically 90 to 180 days) under composting conditions, leaving no toxic residue. Compostable products return to the soil as food for plants. This is a much stricter and more meaningful standard than biodegradable.

Why this matters for your tableware choice

  • A plate labelled biodegradable might still take years to decompose and leave microplastic fragments.
  • A compostable plate like areca leaf decomposes fully in 60-90 days in a home compost pile.
  • Wooden cutlery is compostable in 90-180 days, returning to soil without any chemical residue.
  • Some bagasse plates use binding chemicals that make them biodegradable but not truly compostable at home.
  • Always look for the timeframe and conditions, not just the label.
